For years, the mainframe conversation split cleanly into two camps: "keep it running" and "get off it." That framing is out of date. What we're seeing across energy, financial services, and logistics clients is a third path gaining ground fast — treating the mainframe as a managed, optimised asset rather than either a legacy burden or a migration target.
Three pressures are converging on the same conclusion:
Not a headcount swap. The organisations getting real value are the ones using managed services to access: - A genuine bench of specialist skills, not a single point of failure - Proactive capacity and performance management, not just reactive incident response - A partner who understands the platform's economics well enough to find savings, not just keep the lights on
We expect managed services conversations to keep shifting from a cost-avoidance pitch ("cheaper than hiring") to a capability pitch ("things your in-house team doesn't have room to build"). That's a healthier conversation for both sides, and it's the one we're increasingly having with clients.
